FAQs

Electric fly zappers (also known as bug zappers or electric fly killers) attract flying insects using ultraviolet (UV) light, which acts as a lure. As insects fly towards the light, they come into contact with an internal electrified metal grid, which instantly electrocutes them with a high-voltage, low-current shock.

When positioned and used correctly according to the manufacturer's instructions, electric fly zappers are generally considered safe for humans and pets. They operate on a high voltage but low current, meaning a shock from the grid will hurt but is not typically dangerous for people in good health. Most modern zappers have many safety features, like protective outer grilles (often smaller than 7mm) to prevent accidental contact.

Electric fly zappers are most effective at attracting and killing light-sensitive insects. This primarily includes moths, flies, beetles, mosquitoes, and flying ants. While they can catch some mosquitoes, they are not 100% effective against them.

Electric fly zappers are generally energy-efficient. Depending on their size and power, they typically use between 5-50 Watts.

When an insect hits the high-voltage grid, you will hear a distinct "zap" or "cracking" sound, which varies in loudness depending on the size of the insect and the zapper's voltage. Some models, particularly those using glue boards or fan-base traps, are quietest or near-silent.
